It seems paradoxical, yet painfully true. Many people think that they will spend less if they by-pass
an architect for their building project.

They look for a non-professional to
draw up a plan for the building at a very cheap rate. They hand it over to bricklayers to start immediately
without the supervision of a veteran architect.
The truth is that some bricklayers do not know how to
interpret plans accurately and with precision. They are good at laying block on
another block and applying plumb, that’s all. They can not detect the location
of the door, window, lobby, etc and their sizes too on the plan and on ground.
So they work blindly refusing to admit to the project owner of their shortcoming. Off course, they are
looking for money and will protect their
interest.
This was the case with a project at Ugbighoko, Benin City. A lot of lapses were discovered in
the building after the project had gone far. We advised the owner wisely to demolish some part
of the building to make room for correct window location and lobby. The owner
listened to our advice and decided to
rely on our experience and expertise.
However, he spent more than budgeted for the project because of the compulsory
corrections carried out.
